While cameras were present, this time Tyler Perry was not making a movie. This time Perry was helping with a big problem, feeding the hungry. According to the AP, as reported in USA Today, Perry stepped into a southwest Atlanta warehouse Tuesday and began shoveling packs of rice, cans of veggies and bottles of juice into boxes.
The writer-director-actor of popular films aimed at black audiences volunteered at Hosea Feed the Hungry and the Homeless care center to tackle another issue impacting that community — hunger.
Perry spent part of the morning unloading and packaging food he donated to feed more than 1,000 families at the care center, where organizers say a tanking economy has brought more people seeking help.
Perry, whose film credits include The Family that Preys Together, grew up the poor son of a carpenter in New Orleans and was homeless for a time before launching his multimillion-dollar series of plays and movies. He since has built Tyler Perry Studios and a mansion in Atlanta.
"I've been out on the street, I know what it's about," he said Tuesday. "I couldn't imagine doing that with children looking at me for food."
In shades and a blue button down shirt, Perry stood side by side with volunteers filling boxes with enough food to feed a family for two weeks.
"Help Feed The Homeless is providing that net for working families so they don't become homeless," explained executive director Elisabeth Omilami, as she handed out cans of food to Perry.
